Cell Phones in Europe

So.... i have an international nokia phone that my family got in Australia. Which would make since that the charger for it is Australian...with Austrailian prongs.

I am guessing I should buy a new charger. Since it shouldn't take this many steps

to try to charge a phone...

Which didn't even work...

O well, The real question is... what sort of cell phone company should i go with while in europe??  Does anyone have a suggestion.  One that will carry us from spain to turkey?  COMMENTS PLEASE!

Blog Blocked

Its true, I have been blog blocked. I myself was duped for awhile, convinced that both blogs were one. Rather than compete, I am allowing this blog to be cannabalized. Please visit our new home at http://kaitandalliadventures.blogspot.com/. Thank you for your support. I will miss your views but I will look for your visits at our new home.

Transportation

I am in charge of transportation and most of it is booked already, but it hasn't been easy. With the trip there are two main prongs of transportation; getting to and from Europe and traveling within Europe.

Getting to and from Europe:
Months of watching airline prices it looked like were going to pay around $600 to get Spain and $800 to get home from Turkey. Until my friend Selma alerted me to a deal, through bookingbuddy.com, for $800 round trip flight from Philadelphia to Madrid on Lufthansa. I then booked $5 Megabus tickets from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia and back and a $300 flight from Istanbul to Madrid. I saved us each $300 and we're going to Europe!

Getting around Europe:
I have done a lot of frustrating and tedious research on this topic.
The issue: Do you go for a package deal or try to find individual modes of transportation.
The answer: Research a little for yourself, but typically the package will be better. If you are already buying a package, like the Eurail bundles, it is cheaper to upgrade to more days/ countries than trying to arrange your own transportation for side trips.

Cautionary Tale: I planned our trip and before ordering the tickets I sent an email to Eurail with a few questions and our basic outline. Turns out the ferry we were going to take from Barcelona, Spain to Civitavechhia, Greece was not covered in the Eurail package. So I went back to the drawing board, researched some more and found that it would be cheaper to go from a 3 country pass to a 4 country pass and travel through France, than buy a ferry ticket. The take home note is do your research before you go.

Tips:
1. Generally map out destinations and dates.
2. Determine what Eurail package works best for you.
3. Download the Eurail timetable and railway map.
4. On the Eurail website, check each individual country to find out which trains on the timetable are covered by your pass
5. Check times and days the trains travel. Print a copy of the page and highlight the trains you plan on taking.
6.  Reserve seats if you are able to.

I am not finished yet, the Eurail does not travel to Turkey, therefore I have had to make my own plans, but given the hostility between Turkey and Greece, it has proved to be rigorous test of my will. We still have not booked transportation but I am slowly working on it. I will keep you updated.

I wonder how Kait is doing booking accommodations?

Time to Cement in the Plans

A lot has gone on since the last post, Kaitlin is now quitting her job and able to travel the full three weeks, we decided on dates, August 18th to September 10th, and we bought plane tickets and Eurail tickets.

Here is the basic trip outline... I could not figure out how to neatly include arrows, but you get the picture.

Hola, Buon giorno, Merhaba

Preparing for this trip is taking a lot out of me and my very precious free time. I am what you could consider an overplanner. While I am not marking out every destination spot and restaurant on our trip- we are trying to be "care free"- I am just generally over doing. Take a look for yourself, this is a facebook post from a few weeks ago...

"Six months until Kaitlin and I backpack through the Mediterranean and I was just going over the things I want to accomplish in that time. Work 65 hours a week to save up money- check. Learn how to use my new DSLR camera- getting there. Learn Turkish- check. Learn Italian- starting tomorrow. Learn Spanish- my brain may explode by this time. I think I may be a little overambitious."

The 65 hours turned out to be more like 75 hours and three languages is obviously too much for one person at one time. I am managing though. My friend, Selma, is helping me improve Turkish and Kaitlin has started learning Italian as well. After a talk with my boss we cut my hours back down to 65 hours.

The closer it gets the more excited and anxious I become. Five months to go!

Starting at the Beginning: August 2010

The Conception
Carpe Diem! Embrace two decades of friendship and throw caution to wind. Recently I have wanted to visit Turkey, what a better excuse than for an anniversary with my best friend. It is time to let my hair down and loosen the purse strings. Call up my best friend and share the idea; Spain, Italy and Turkey it is; of course Kaitlin is on board, has she ever been known to turn down an adventure.

The Idea
Spend a month traveling along the coastline of the Mediterranean in a carefree fashion indistinguishable from the locals.

The Reality
Kaitlin's over booked, chaotic life only affords her a two week break from reality. That leaves us with only two short weeks to travel from Madrid to Barcelona to Rome and make a pit stop in Venice at which point Kaitlin returns to the States and I continue my journey onto Istanbul.

Welcome to my blog, come on in and stay a while.

Time is ticking away and in a few short months I will be on my way to the Mediterranean with my best friend in tow. After a 20 year friendship we have decided to rekindle the "honeymoon phase" with a trip overseas. Feel free to join us on an adventure to experience new cultures, cuisines and plenty of exploration.

Please feel free to comment and let me know how I can improve my blog. Thanks!

2 weeks away!

O my goodness! we are leaving in less then 2 weeks!

I am geeking out! I, Kait, have been booking Hostels all week.

So, faithful blog readers... Let me update you on how our trip is shaping up

Thursday august 18th we will wake up so early and board a Mega bus to Philly. Then take a subway to the airport. From Philly we will fly into Frankfurt Germany and transfer to Madrid, Spain. In Madrid during that weekend Catholic World Youth Day is happening! (I have attended World Youth day gatherings since 2002 when we went to Toronto.... Since then wed has taken me to Germany in 2005 and Australia in 2008...but I digress)

In Madrid we will be hopefully staying with a family on Friday, then hiking to the mass site on Saturday, camping out there, Big Big Mass with the Pope on Sunday. then we will be fighting out way to a train station. Our train leaves Madrid for Barcelona at 5pm. We are staying at a charming hostel called 'Pere Tarres' from august 21 -23.

On August 23 we hop on the train and head up the coast from Spain to the south of France. Our first stop is Montpellier for lunch, then back on the train for Avignon and we are 'couch surfing', a lovely young professional Adeline B has agreed to host us for the day. The next day we say goodbye and hop onto another train. Our tour de France then takes us to Marsielle for lunch and then to Nice (pronounced niece, not n-ice). For those of you keeping score that Is 9 cities in 6 days so far.

In Nice on the 24th we are staying in another hostel called ' Camellas' for the night. Then onward! On the 25th -27th we will be somewhere in Tuscany. I am still looking for b&bs for us to stay at. Our hopes are to go to one where they will either cook home made food for us or teach us how to prepare Tuscan cuisine. On the 27th we board out trains again and travel to Milan for lunch then off to the beautiful water city of Venice! In Venice we will be staying on an island at the Venizia hostel! I am excited about this one because that's my friend richie's last name , heheh, hi richie.

Life is too short to be tired.... So the next day we are on the road again. heading down through Italy. August 28 in Florence we are staying in a charming hostel called 'tavamelle'. Then we will do lunch in Sienna on our waybto Rome! Derek so excited for that big city. we will be based in Rome from August 29th until September 3rd, staying a their Downtown hostel. While in Rome we will be sampling as many local hidden eateries, taking day trips to Naples for pizza, and Pompeii just because it's so close and famous.

We leave Rome on September 3rd and head down the coast to Bari, a port city for lunch. Our ferry leaves Bari for a really longed named city which I have no idea how to pronounce, igoumenstitia. From there we train it over to Patras, Greece. Then by the grace of God we will wheel and deal our wau into Athens. While in Athens we are tentatively 'couch surfing' with another young professional named Artemis S. I love that name! Can I just say how exited I am to be meeting so many people. I need to remember to make business cards to give to people with this blog on it and my email.

Ok, so yes yes yes Alli and I are fully aware that Greece and turkey are less then chummy as of late. But the show must go on! On September 4th we board a bus in Athens and all night will travel over the roads of Greece up into Turkey. We will bridge that cultural gap, and wake up in Istanbul! A lot of people has expressed their concerns about this stop. If you, dear reader are one of those like minded people, watch Anthony Bourdains episode in Istanbul.... It inspired me and excited me about going! Like professor Trelarny says, 'Broaden your minds!'

From September 5th through 9th wenwill be at the faaaabulous Sultan Hostel in a private double room with a shower and toilet! Livin it up in Istanbul. On the 9th we head back to the airport early in the morning and catch a plane back to Madrid. Now or plans for that day are open.... Who know what will happen... But we don't really intend on sleeping!

September 10th is a long day...literally... Since we will be traveling through numerous time zones backwards. Flying from Madrid to Frankfurt transferring planes then from Frankfurt to Philly. then a subway to the Mega bus, hopefully catching the pus game vs Alabama (happy birthday daddy) and arriving back home just minutes before midnight. Whew!

We'll those a our plans for now.... Stay tuned for a Kait and Alli vlog post within the next week on the topic.... "it's so close" and Kait's vlog ....on..... We'll.... Whatever I feel like... It's my vlog!

Cheers!
Kait and Alli!
